How to get snakes out from under a shed or porch
Snakes like denning in safe and shady areas. But also like basking in the sun to warm-up their cold blood. Even though snakes are cold-blooded animals, they want the shade to live under. As such, they often live under a house, deck, porch, or under other buildings. Most of the snakes that find their way into our homes are harmless but can creep some nervous people out. Even though not all snakes are venomous, a snake under a building could be a real nuisance, especially when poisonous or grown too huge. A poisonous or large snake can be a real threat to your household as they can attack pets when they feel threatened. Besides that, they can also swallow some small-sized pets whole. Therefore, if you have a very large or poisonous snake in your yard, then you should have it taken care of as soon as possible. If you have a snake problem under your house, porch, or deck and really want to get rid of them, the following ways can be of great help. Call a professional snake removal: A professional snake removal is highly skilled and knowledgeable when it comes to handling venomous and large snakes. Additionally, they have all the necessary tools and equipment for handling all sorts of snakes without jeopardizing safety. If you don't have enough bucks to pay a pro, you can buy a snake trap and use it to get rid of the scary animal. You can purchase the traps from your local store, online store, or garden show. Even though the traps are effective in trapping snakes, it doesn't provide a long-lasting solution as these crawly critters will learn not to get into the trap.
Trap and relocate the snake
Do as much as you can to identify the intruding snake: Knowing the snake species will help you choose the right type and size of trap to use for your task.
Get the right type of trap: Glue trap is the most commonly used trap as it comes in both small and large sizes. Besides that, it's also humane and effective. You can get one from your local home improvement and garden supply store. If you're dealing with many snakes, you can try out a minnow trap. Even though you can buy multiple glue traps, a minnow trap is relatively inexpensive and easy to come by. You can look for one from your local fishing supply store.
Set your trap at a strategic location: Ensure the place you're setting your trap in is where the snakes visit most. This increases your chances of trapping the snake(s).
Ensure the snake trap is firmly closed at the time you're getting it set. For the case of a glue trap, ensure the latch closing the box is clasped.
If you opted for a minnow trap, set it up in such a way that the cylinder rests on its side.
Check the traps frequently to ensure that the trapped snake does not die in the trap.
Deal with the trapped snake.
Do not touch a trapped snake with your bare hands if you're unsure of whether it's venomous or non-venomous. Wear leather gloves and protective clothing before approaching the cage with the trapped snake Relocate the snake at least a mile away from your home and other households. In addition to that, ensure you're releasing the snake in a suitable environment with higher chances of survival. Use repellant: Getting a single effective snake repellant isn't easy. But some people say that mothballs can work pretty well. However, you'll have to apply repellants regularly, thereby incurring high costs at the bottom-line.
Trim plants: Snakes often hide at the base of bushes and tall grass. As such, clearing the bushes around and cutting the grass short can keep off the creatures.
Install a snake fence: Install a snake-proof fence at the perimeter of your property.
Control rodents: Control the rodent population on your property to avoid attracting snakes.
Keep a cat or a dog: Snakes fear slithering around in homes with a dog or a cat as they like to be left alone.
Note: There are many effective ways of keeping snakes away from under decks and porches, and as such, killing the snake should only be the last option.
